All you need to know about Combination Locks
Combination locks use a combination of numbers or symbols in order to get them open. They do not use a key like other types of locks. A sequence of numbers or symbols are entered into the locking mechanism through the use of a single rotating dial or several rotating discs. These discs or dials directly interact with the locking mechanism of the device. After the correct sequence of numbers or symbols is entered, the lock opens.
The following is a list of the most popular combination locks available. These are:
Multiple-dial locks
The multiple-dial lock is considered one of the least secure locks available in the market. They are more often used in low-security situations, for example to lock a bike. They are assembled using a number of rotating discs with notches cut unto them. To secure the lock, a pin with teeth is inserted. When the discs are rotated and the notches align with the teeth on the pin, it opens.
Opening a multiple-dial lock with no combination is relatively easy. An easy way is to pull the pin while at the same time rotating the discs. Continue to rotate each individual disc until a small click is heard. This click signifies that a match between the teeth and the notch has been accomplished. Continue the same process on all the other discs until the lock is open. This is a very easy process, requiring simply a bit of patience.
Single-dial locks
Single-dial locks are much more reliable and safer than the Multiple-dial locks. Due to their safety, you will find these locks on most safes or padlocks. Their mechanism consists of a rotating dial. To open them, you dial the first number clockwise, the second number counterclockwise, and so on. Once all the numbers have been dialed in and the notches align, the lock will open.
Even with the increased safety of Single-dial locks, early production padlocks were easy to open. For example, some of the early Master padlocks could be easily opened by pulling on the shackle of the lock, then turning the dial until it completely stopped. By doing this, you could deduce the combination easily and with minor effort.
Electronic locks
Some of the newer combination locks utilize electronic circuitry instead of mechanical tumblers to secure your valuables . These electronic marvels require you to enter a sequence of numbers on a keypad. If the set of number is the correct one, the lock opens.
When using these type of locks, a key is no longer necessary in order to open the lock. You only need to remember a numeric combination. The only disadvantage is if the combination number is leaked, a new combination must be programmed into the lock.
