Video surveillance systems is quite a popular subject, and you will find some information in the article below. This should help you get started on your search for information. I hope you find the article relevant, and that you will share it with others. Do let us know what you think about the article.
Home Video Surveillance Systems: How Does It Work?

Author: Abhishek Agarwal

The first video surveillance systems were used by large and medium-sized businesses to monitor for shop-lifting and to keep an eye on cash-handling areas. They have been very effective in identifying and prosecuting criminals. Today, though, more homeowners are installing video surveillance systems. Also called closed circuit TV (CCTV), home video surveillance systems allow homeowners to monitor specific areas and keep an eye on potential thieves, burglars, and vandals.

The monitor is the defining characteristics of video surveillance systems. It receives a live picture from the camera. Normally black and white, the monitors boast higher resolutions than most home televisions, standard resolutions being between 500 and 1000 lines.

Of course, the camera is an important component of the video surveillance system. During installation, the cameras are located strategically outside the home in vulnerable areas like entry ways, porticos, and where landscaping hides access to windows. For a more effective system, cameras should be placed where they are difficult to see. They work continuously, feeding images to the monitor either constantly or at timed intervals.

Coaxial cables tie the video surveillance systems together. Available in many different sizes from local electronics retailers, they transmit the video signal from camera to monitor. These cables come with the video surveillance systems, but there are times when extra longer cables must be purchased for far-away cameras.

Home video surveillance systems also include switchers that allow the user to hook up several cameras to one central monitor. Automated switchers normally cycle through camera stations until it detects movement. When that happens, they lock on the camera where movement has occurred to monitor possible security breaches.

Some home video surveillance systems can be used with VCRs to record the live video feeds. Particularly useful when the family is away on travel, the VCR can record a break-in as it happens, saving a picture of the criminal for later investigation and prosecution. Your home video surveillance system then provides a critical piece of evidence for law enforcement.

Home video surveillance systems make it possible to get the level of security for your home that, in the past, were available only to businesses with large security budgets. Today, they are so affordable that they are used in homes across the country.

If you've been looking for a way to better protect your home and belongings, a video surveillance system may be the way to go. One cautionary word: remember that video surveillance systems do not automatically sound an alarm or notify the police or fire department of emergencies when they occur. You'll still want to have a reliable burglar alarm system. What they will do is provide a permanent image of the crime in progress to make arrest and prosecution more likely.

By Steve Strong

Think of the word "security camera." What images first come to mind? We usually think about their function of protecting people through the prevention of an array of crimes, such as theft. However, surveillance camera systems can be used for a variety of other uses.

Watching dogs like a hawk

In fact, Great Britain, which has the world’s highest number of security cameras per capita, has used the cameras for a variety of interesting investigations that go beyond burglar-busting. These include false damage claims, monitoring people who work while on sick leave, littering, and misuse of parking passes for handicapped people. And in one of the most interesting set of cases, local governments investigated dogs that did their "business" on public property. Like any other tool, security cameras should be used properly. That includes using them in moderation, and ensuring that the owners of the cameras do not misuse the collected footage.

Cat cousins and Dog daughters

However, speaking of pets, video surveillance systems, such as those using 8 channel DVR cards, can be instrumental in keeping your pet dog, cat, bird, or iguana, safe and sound. In countries such as the United States and England, pets are more than animals that live in your house—they are often members of the family.

Pets are big business in America. Some animal lovers are willing to dish out several thousands of dollars, for a rare breed. And of course, all pet owners must constantly ensure that one of our pets’ most basic needs is met: food. Last year, in the United States alone, people spent over $16 billion on pet food. That is a whole lot of doggy milk bones, cat snacks, and flakes for fishes!

Insuring Fido and Fluffy

To protect pets of a rare breed, you could secure an insurance policy. Of course, none of us animal loves likes to consider the possibility that our beloved pet could be petnapped. But as one saying instructs, it is wise to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

However, keep in mind that if you do that, you have to hold up your end of the bargain.

In particular, exclusions are implemented when you fail to keep the animal in its natural surroundings. For the policy to remain valid, you must also feed it the right foods, and feed it regularly. So if you have, for example, a marmoset monkey in your house, make sure that the temperature remains proper, and that it gets its daily dose of Vitamin D3.

Petnapping is no catnap

Also, security camera systems with 8 channel dvr cards, can do more than protect ourselves and our children. They can also keep an eye on our pets, even when we are out of the house. In petnapping, pets are stolen, with the criminals often demanding a ransom.

If you own a pet, the animal is more than an investment, so you want it to remain safe and secure 100% of the time. One of the best ways to maintain this goal, is through video surveillance systems, which can include 8 channel dvr cards. Make it your next pet project!

By Nahshon Roberts

Around the world, various nations utilize public video surveillance as a leading tool for monitoring movement and possible terrorist acts. Some of these countries have come to rely very heavily on video surveillance for aid in crime prevention. That is not a surprise. Results show that video surveillance is indeed making an impact in the fight against crime.

Oh Canada

Canada began taking advantage of video surveillance in the early nineties. It is widely used by such establishments as banks, restaurants, and convenience stores. Video surveillance is also usually present in offices, apartments, and transit stations. A large part of all robberies in Canada are captured on videotape. Needless to say, this is a huge help to law enforcement personnel. Even missing persons cases are solved with the help of surveillance systems.

Canada also uses video surveillance in recording license plates of all vehicles that pass through its borders coming from or going to the United States. It also keeps video footage of all cars that pass through its toll booths. It is no wonder then that video surveillance has grown into a highly reliable tool.

France Is In

The war on terror sold France on the value of video surveillance. The French government authorizes cameras in public places such as major roads and public areas in cities. The authorities use hundreds of cameras to monitor French suburbs. In the business district of Paris, over a hundred cameras monitor the streets on a 24-hour basis.

France's transport officials also use video surveillance to regulate the flow of traffic, ease traffic jams, and keep track of any disturbances. There are over 2,000 cameras on the buses plying the routes of Paris. You can be sure that this will help detect any criminal acts that may occur! As a result, the crime rate has decreased. A lot of department stores in France also use surveillance systems. So too with France's airline terminals.

The Others Follow

Ireland also uses video surveillance to monitor post offices, stores, offices and many other public locations. The country's rail system is also monitored constantly with cameras. The prevalence of such surveillance has begun to decrease the crime rate of Ireland.

Spain uses video surveillance to ensure the safety of tourist areas. With the events following 9/11, the Spanish government has turned to this type of technology to ensure the security of its citizens. There has also been a special effort to set up surveillance in the Basque region to curb violence and vandalism in that area.

There is a reason for the adoption of this type of technology. It works. Not only that. It is cost-effective. It leverages the existing law enforcement personnel as well. By any measure, that is a good deal. It is no wonder then that all these countries have opted to incorporate video surveillance into their security operations. The results speak for themselves. Video surveillance is an excellent tool in the war against crime and terror. It will continue to grow and progress in its usage as time goes by.

Home video surveillance systems cover an array of home security apparatus. Visible cameras, concealed cameras, wireless cameras, web integrated cameras, spy cameras, wall mounted motion sensing cameras, and even infrared cameras all fall within the auspices of home video surveillance systems.

Wireless cameras are a must where home video surveillance systems are concerned. First off, in this time of financial crunch, a wireless camera system will save you money. You will save money in time saved as well as dollars. No hassle, no wiring necessary, easily mounted and ready to go; these are just a few of the benefits of having a wireless camera as part of your home video surveillance system.

Some wireless models come equipped with motion detectors. That is especially important if you are a business owner and want to monitor your property after hours. In that case an infrared wireless model equipped with motion detection would be what you desire. Remember that your cameras work better in 'teams'. Three cameras are the optimum number when dealing with home video surveillance systems. Focus each camera on a zone that is complimentary to its team mates. Keep in mind that some cameras have swivel and panning features; plan accordingly to cover every angle.

You can go online and browse different websites when searching for a home video surveillance system. Shop around, look at less well known models; sometimes these offer the better bargain without compromising functionality. Home improvement stores carry home video surveillance systems as well as department stores. Be informed and shop wise.

Homeowners who are considering installing home video surveillance systems can benefit from free assessments offered by any security company out there. There are forms that you can benefit from that asks detailed questions of your monitoring needs. These forms take into account the size of your monitoring area, lighting considerations, ambient sounds and motion. Always remember, if you run into any problems, go with professional help.

Author: Robert Bell

Video surveillance, also called CCTV (closed-circuit television), is now more than 30 years old and has had more than its share of technological advancements. As in any industry, the ever-increasing demands of users are driving progress, while technologies evolve to meet them. In the video surveillance industry, three decades of demands have resulted in:
*	simpler installation and maintenance,
*	better image quality,
*	remote control and monitoring,
*	cost reductions,
*	secure, reliable technology,
*	reduced size as well as scalability,
*	longer storage of captured video,
*	integration into other systems, and
*	built-in system intelligence

On its journey, video surveillance has gone through various technology phases. The latest is the move from analog equipment to fully digital, PC- and network-based surveillance systems.

The originals
Video surveillance systems were originally 100% analog systems but they gradually became digital over the decades. Modern systems, using webcams and servers in a start-to-finish digital system, have come a tremendous distance from early analog tube cameras that were connected to VCRs (videocassette recorders).

The brief sections below outline, with broad strokes, the evolution of video surveillance.

VCRs and analog CCTV
The original CCTV systems used analog cameras connected to VCRs for video recording. This is an analog system through-and-through. The VCRs used for surveillance were the same machines, using the same tape cassettes, as in home units. Every camera had its own coaxial cable connecting it to the VCR. The video images were not compressed, so a recording at full frame rate gave a maximum time of eight hours on the longest tapes.

Soon enough, of course, some developed a "time lapse mode" that got more images onto the tape, covering more time. This mode extended the recording time by capturing every second, fourth, eighth or sixteenth image, which is how such specifications as 15 fps (frames per second) - and 7.5 fps, 3.75 fps, etc. - came into usage. When several cameras were required, it led to the development of "quads" as another component for the system. A quad unit took four camera inputs and altered the video signal to show four images on the screen. This invention added a bit of scalability but at the price of lower resolution.

Analog DVR systems
The mid-1990s saw the video surveillance industry's first "digital revolution" with the advent of DVRs (Digital Video Recorders). The DVR recorded to hard drives instead of tapes, meaning that the video was digitized and compressed to store many more hours (even days) in the same space.

Hard disk space was limited in early models, the recording durations were still limited, or lower frame rates were used for longer times. Because of the cost and limitations of hard drives, various manufacturers came up with their own proprietary schemes for compressing the video. Even when they worked well, users were limited to that manufacturer's products for replaying the video. The cost of hard disk space decreased quickly over the 1990s and into the 2000s, allowing standardized compression schemes like MPEG-4 to get a foothold. This meant manufacturers could give up their costly, proprietary compression in favor of new standards, greatly benefiting end users.

Analog network DVRs
DVRs were soon equipped with Ethernet ports, enabling network connectivity. With network DVRs on the market, users could now set up remote video monitoring with standard, low-cost PCs. Some of today's network DVR systems allow the monitoring of both live and recorded images, and while some systems require a special Windows software for monitoring, others work with a standard Web browser, which makes remote monitoring less costly as well as more flexible.

NVRs and hybrid DVRs
Today one can select an open platform based on a generic PC that has the right video software, or use different types of proprietary Network Video Recorders (NVRs) as well as "combo" (or hybrid) DVRs. Hybrid DVRs and NVRs are proprietary boxes of hardware with embedded video management software letting you manage video from both encoders and network cameras. A true NVR will take only network video inputs, while a hybrid DVR will work with both network video and analog inputs, even in parallel. There are certain benefits to using an NVR or hybrid DVR, among which is ease of installation (recording and video management capabilities are all available all in a single box).

Network-camera video systems
A network camera is commonly referred to as an IP camera and, as its name implies, is a camera that has an assigned IP network address. Network camera-based systems send video over an IP network via network switches, and record image streams to a PC server with video management software. This is a true, digital network video setup - and that's "fully digital" since no analog components route, mix or otherwise touch the images. Among the major benefits of a network camera is the fact that once images are digitized upon capture, they remain digital throughout the entire process, making for higher resolution and consistently better image quality.
